I came across this article stating that the president has the power to completely shut off cyberspace here in the united states. A bill was passed in 2010 called “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010″ this bill gives the president the power to “authorize emergency measures to protect the nation’s most critical infrastructure if a cyber vulnerability is being exploited or is about to be exploited.” Which people started calling it the Internet kill switch, you would think this is impossible to do here in American right? I mean we see China's government controlling the Internet by shutting down certain parts of the Internet in case of war,and Egypt's government shutdown Internet too. Although this bill was expired with a new congress, another was passed but this time called “Cybersecurity and Internet Freedom Act of 2011.” Ironically this was passed the same day Egypt's Internet was shutdown. This bill contains the words 'freedom' but it allows the government to have power over privately owned computer systems. Okay so before you get your pantie up in a bunch, the new bill states the neither the president or anyone can have the power to actually shut down cyberspace but it does give the Department of Homeland Security the power to issue decrees to privately owned companies in a cyber emergency. Seems reasonable (: phewww when i first came across this article the first thing i said was "ooooooo
